What is TeamWench?
This primarily female group was started in 2000 when groups of Maryland Renaissance Festival enthusiasts (many of whom are International Wenches Guild members) decided to form teams to walk for Breast Cancer and Multiple Sclerosis. The 2001 MS Walk in Annapolis, MD was the first event completed by the Team and the 2001 Capital Area Avon 3-day Walk for Breast Cancer was the second.
The Team has now grown to include both men and women. Inspired by the enthusiasm behind the first two events the Team has held clothing drives for shelters, sewing bees to make cancer turbans and pillows, and fundraising sales for a variety of causes. Team members have participated in the Relay for Life and other 1-, 2-, and 3-day walks for Suicide Prevention, Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Help the Homeless Walk and Multiple Sclerosis.
The 2002 Privateer Feast was the Team's first major fundraiser. That Feast raised nearly $3,400.00 and helped Team members meet their minimums for the Avon 3-day Walk. This Privateer Feast has become an annual event to help Team Wench members meet their fundraising goals for a variety of Breast Cancer walks. This event is extremely popular and has sold out every year.
As several members of the Team have MS, Multiple Sclerosis was the obvious focus when the Team decided to add a second fundraising feast to their annual agenda. In 2004 the Team added the MS Fantasy Ball. The Ball raised nearly $4,600 that year and sponsored three participants in the NMSS Chesapeake Challenge 3-day Walk.
Team Wench and its members collect no profits from their work, and have donated more than $50,000 to charity since their inception.
